The requirement in summary

To graduate from Alia, a student must:

• Complete the required credits in each core and elective subject area.
• Pass every subject counted towards the diploma.
• Complete the community service requirement.
• Be recommended by the faculty as a student of good character.
• Be approved by the school administration.
• Meet all financial and administrative obligations to the school.

A student who satisfies all six earns the Alia High School Diploma.

Credit requirements

Credits are earned by successfully completing courses. Each course, when passed, awards a specific number of credit units towards the total required for graduation.

Compulsory credits

Every student takes the following courses across Grades 9 to 12.

• English: 4 credits, one credit per grade from Grade 9 through Grade 12.
• Mathematics: 4 credits. Geometry (Grade 9), Algebra 2 (Grade 10), Pre-calculus (Grade 11), Calculus (Grade 12).
• Science: 4 credits. Physical Science (Grade 9), Biology (Grade 10), Chemistry (Grade 11), Physics (Grade 12).
• Social Studies: 4 credits, one credit per grade, covering Social Studies, History and Geography, and Economics.
• World Languages: 2 credits. Arabic, or Arabic Language Development for students who need it, taken across all four grades at 0.5 credits per grade.
• Physical Education: 2 credits, taken across all four grades.
• ICT / Computer: 2 credits, taken across all four grades.

Total compulsory credits: 22.

Local requirements

For students following the Bahrain Ministry of Education pathway, two additional credit requirements apply.

• Islamic Studies: 1 credit, taken across all four grades at 0.25 credits per grade. Islamic Language Development is available for students learning Arabic as an additional language.
• Social Studies Arabic: 1 credit, taken across all four grades at 0.25 credits per grade. A developmental track is available for students who need it.

Total local requirement credits: 2.

Elective credits

Students choose electives to reach the required total. The current elective offering includes ICT courses at Grade 10, 11, and 12 level, worth 1 credit per grade. The specific elective offering may vary year to year depending on staffing, resources, and Ministry of Education approval.

A student following the full Ministry of Education pathway earns 27 credits over four years:

• Compulsory credits: 22

A student exempted from the Islamic Studies or Social Studies Arabic requirements, for language reasons or on religious grounds, follows a modified total. Their target credit count typically ranges between 25 and 27 depending on exemptions.

Passing every subject

A credit is earned only when the subject is passed. A student must achieve a minimum passing grade in every subject counted towards the diploma. Failing a subject results in a credit of zero for that course, and the student must repeat or retake the subject to earn the credit.

The school’s assessment and grading criteria are set out in the student handbook and apply consistently across all subjects.

Community service

Every student completes a community service requirement as part of the diploma. The specific hours and forms of service are set out in the student handbook and communicated to students at the start of Grade 9. Community service is not an optional extra. It is part of what a diploma at Alia certifies.

Character and administration

Two further requirements complete the diploma. The faculty must recommend the student as a student of good character and integrity, and the school administration must approve graduation. All financial obligations to the school must be settled before the diploma is issued or the student participates in graduation ceremonies.

Ministry of Education alignment

The Alia diploma is aligned with the requirements of the Bahrain Ministry of Education for students following that pathway. This means the diploma is recognized locally, alongside its WASC accreditation, which supports university applications regionally and internationally.
